Yes, above a threshold. G.S. 87-1 puts the floor at forty thousand dollars of undertaking cost, moved up from thirty thousand on 1 October 2023, and the state board in Raleigh administers it. Alamance County takes damaging hail in some springs and none at all in others, and the premium for an impact-rated product buys considerably more roof if you spend it instead on perimeter metal, a rebuilt fascia and gutters hung to carry weight. If someone is pushing a Class 4 upgrade hard after a storm you did not personally experience, treat that as information about the contractor.
My ceiling stains in January but never in summer. Is that a leak?
Probably not a roof leak. Two other things do that here. Meltwater backing up behind an ice-packed gutter shows up hours after the weather has cleared rather than during it, and it appears along an exterior wall. Attic condensation shows up as small rusty rings in a grid at the deck fasteners on cold clear mornings. Both are fixed at the eave and the soffit, not by cutting into perfectly good shingles.
How fast can you tarp my roof after an ice storm?
Not while it is still glazed, and we will tell you that plainly on the phone. A film of clear ice makes a roof unwalkable and unanchorable, and a tarp fastened into a frozen deck does not hold anyway.
